Nice article. I didn't see the poll but wouldn't have chosen Szobo. Nice reminder though that even if (I'm assuming) he underperformed his xg that he was a big contributor in many ways. I think his best position would be on the right of a midfield three, but our success last year may not have happened without his contributions in the ten role. It's one of many spots he can play at a pretty good level, similar to Wirtz. Will be fascinating to see where Wirtz will play. Media seem convinced that Slot's told Wirtz he's taking Szobo's spot. Surely some tactical change is incoming with
Thanks for the work that went into this Andrew. You can see how involved Dom was in chance creation with lots of different partners. Add that to his defensive contribution and it seems he's likely to play a lot WITH Florian than apart. He's such an important player for us that Arne will have to accommodate him (double 10s?). The biggest change might be Luis needing to play wider / higher than he's used to as Florian will want to drop into the space where Luis gets involved in midfield. Thoughts?
It's interesting - I was thinking about the double 10s idea, as it makes some sense with Szoboszlai and Wirtz. However, the one time they used it, at Man City, Trent was deep and Robertson not too far further forward (average positions available here: https://www.sofascore.com/football/match/liverpool-manchester-city/rU#id:12436627). That doesn't feel like it fits with Frimpong and (presumably) Kerkez. Equally, City away is still one of the hardest games of the season, even in a down year for them. It isn't representative of the average match, so you'd expect defenders to be deeper.
In short, I don't know ;-) I'm no tactical expert but I'm not sure it would work with flying fullbacks of the type Liverpool look likely to deploy next season.
Hands up who picked Salah and Szoboszlai as the top combination then!
