I‘m with you! Very nice insight without using xG. Did you also look into avg distance and saved % per shot? The latter is a bit flimsy but could give an indication how well shots are placed. (Post shot xG vs xG would be more helpful, but I understand your aim was to avoid xG altogether)
Yeah I was trying to use metrics from a very long time ago, whereas xG and distance per shot are relatively recent additions. It was really based on Liverpool having so many shots against Brentford and me thinking “I bet there were more from long range in that Everton game”, and going from there.
What do we think then, folks? Too grand a claim? 'Best' or not, Liverpool score incredibly well in two very important shot metrics.
