Please can I ask. How much of the trends above do you think are due to sprints and intensity in matches versus in training? Klopp’s training methods were notoriously very tough and intense. I think some players would say that Klopp training was deliberately harder than matches. My sense is that it’s not just matches, but also training, perhaps even more so training, that also explains the trends in this article. Many thanks for an excellent article
You could well be right. Getting hold of the physical data from training might be more fascinating than from matches!
Training is reportedly less intense under Slot: “While Klopp was known for his intense training sessions, Slot has introduced a more balanced approach. Training days may be longer, but they are not as physically demanding as they were under Klopp, allowing players more time for recovery and gym work.” https://onefootball.com/en/news/revealed-arne-slots-meticulous-methods-on-the-liverpool-training-ground-40125134 That would presumably lower injury risk outside games too.
Andrew, thank you for digging and presenting this data in a such an enlightening way.
I was asking you about running stats since my feeling was that we play clever under Slot and try to minimize the physical strain. Klopp was a firm believer in hard working while Slot mantra is more like "work smarter not harder". This difference between them is somehow mirroring German vs Dutch stereotypes.
Mo Salah may sprint more under Slot because he needs to. The team creates more situations for Mo patrly due to the fact that he stays higher and defending slightly less this year. We also use his enormous talent smarter I feel.
Your research bodes well for the future. Thank you for the good news.
Very interesting to see some numbers behind Slot's more balanced approach. It does feel like we're not picking up as many muscle injuries this season - that said, last year seemed to be abnormal for injuries.
Does this current trajectory (and also Slot's history with Feyenoord) have any bearing on your opinion in this transfer market?
I feel like we could do with a CB in; but maybe there's a high likelihood that Konate could actually stay fit between now and May.
Yeah there haven’t been many muscle injuries (though it’s hard to find concrete reasons for certain cases). Gomez is a hamstring, and I think Ali, Trent and Bradley have been out with muscle injuries but that might be it.
Re a CB - as ever with Liverpool, it will depend if someone they want is available. I doubt they’ll get one for the sake of it.

‘Inside Training‘ showed them sprinting with weights or catching weights under Arne. Wonder if this is too simulate impact and balance.

Fantastic article! The correlation between number of injuries and points is dramatic.
Thanks mate. Like I say in the article, the correlation is obvious really but the chart certainly proves it!
