Slot pointed out an important aspect of shots which is not reflected in the data: the speed. Did I imagine it or was there a recent tournament in which after every goal the broadcaster showed shot speed and even spin?
Lovely piece Andrew. What stood out to me was the multiple shots he parried one handed out of danger. A less capable Keeper could have given up significantly more than 2.3 goals with average parrying ability.
Thanks. I wish the data was compiled somewhere (rather than having to go through game by game on Whoscored) but Opta do break down saves into ‘parried away safely’, ‘parried into danger’ etc. I suspect Ali has a sizeable percentage of the former.
Loved the balanced tone of the article and appreciate the data to show what the eyes tell us: the man is incredible on 1v1s. Can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone better!

Yeah that did happen, maybe in the last European Championship?

Thanks, Sean. Yeah the data isn’t a shock on the big chances but it would be great to know what the likes of Schmeichel and Seaman were posting!
So, is the #1 now past his best? Or does he not need to be now that Liverpool are more solid?
Probably both. And that’s fine, Giorgi.
